THE THREE KINDS OF LOVE
It is
undeniable that the vital role that “lectures” play in the lives of
students are to educate and entertain them at the same time. Lectures are
activities where an adult would discuss something and share his experience with
students. On a hot afternoon of the “intramurals” week, all of the fourth year
students (including me) in our school were told to gather in the function hall
to listen to a lecture. This lecture during my senior year in
highschool have taught me about the three kinds of love called Eros, Philos,
and Agape.
I learned that the first kind of
love is Eros which is also called “erotic love”. It comes from the Greek belief
in a God called by the same name. It is a selfish kind of love that seeks to
conquer and control. This kind of love is based more on physical traits. I have
experienced this kind of love when I was still in my sophomore year in high
school. I have a huge crush on this guy who was of the same age as me. He is
the ideal prince I've always dreamt of loving. He is tall, white, cute,
charming, and intelligent. Since he is my crush I always try to catch his
attention but sad to say, he never ever
have noticed me. I was hurt because of that I got angry at him and I never tried to talk to him after that.
I learned that the second kind of
love is Philos. It is a kind of love based on friendship between two people. It
is a unique kind of love, like the love that one has for a friend, a companion,
and brother/sister. It is a love based on give and take, where people benefit
each other in a mutual way. One partner is still concerned with what he/she can
take but at the same time is also concerned with his/ her partners benefit. I
experienced this kind of love during my junior up to senior year in highschool.
This is the time that I can really say that I truly loved and cared for someone. My bestfriend is aways there for me everytime
I need someone to talk to—whatever it is—she will always be there to listen and
give me advice. She is the only person who have been loyal to me and is worthy
of my trust. In times she have problems like love problems, but mostly financial
problems, I always let her borrow my money. I know she is ashamed and she feels so low everytime she
borrows money at me so I always tell her that I don’t really need the money since I am
going on a diet. If I keep the money then I will just buy junk food and
softdrinks and those bad foods make me look like a pig and I also laugh and
enumerate to her my plans when I'm already slim. And she always smiles after
that. I just wish that she would be able to enjoy studying in this famous
school like I do and she would never worry about money.
I learned that the third and the
last kind of love is Agape which is also called the “unconditional love”. It is
a totally selfless love. It is when a person gives out love to another person
even if he/she cannot benefit from it. A good example of this kind of love is
the unconditional love of God to us – his children. When God chose to send his
one and only son to suffer and die on the cross for our salvation. Another
example of this is our parents. They always do their best for us to be able to
study in a good school, so that someday we will be able to have a good work,
and so that we won’t suffer the hardships of life, like them. They are always
there for us even in times that we have misunderstandings and quarrels. They
don’t give up on us even if we ourselves have given up on us. They love us even
if they don’t leave a little for themselves. They buy us expensive things we
want while they use old and cheap phones. It is really an unmeasurable kind of
love. So we must always love, respect and take good care of our parents and
family. They are the only people who can love us selflessly after God.
Gaining more knowledge about the three kinds
of love -- Eros, Philos, and Agape-- I
have been able to identify the kind of
love I felt during my past “love” experiences. Learning about
the three kinds of love helped me to identify whether what I am feeling for
someone is a mere attraction, love for a friend, or a selfless love and because
of that I’ve been able to deal with love and give love advices to my friends
and younger sisters.
